Battleborn Updates Are Ending, But The Game Is "Here To Stay"

Battleborn, the hero shooter from Borderlands studio Gearbox, is getting one more big update and then that's it. Creative director Randy Varnell made the announcement in a forum post, stating, "As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update."
Though updates are ending, Battleborn is "here to stay," Varnell said. The game's servers are staying online "for the foreseeable future." As for the Fall update, this was announced at PAX West. It'll include new, Borderlands-themed skins, updated title art, and new Finisher boosts and taunts. Some "minor" balance changes are also included.
Varnell added that he will be transitioning to a role on the team that is currently development Gearbox's unannounced game, which could be Borderlands 3.
"I've been working on Battleborn nearly exclusively since 2012, and in some ways, that work stretches back to 2009 for me," Varnell said. "It's been a long labor of love with many of my good friends at Gearbox, and I'm proud to have shared that journey with you, our community. Your spirit and loyalty have been a constant inspiration to the team at Gearbox."
Varnell went on to say he thanks fans for "giving Battleborn a chance." The game underperformed for publisher 2K Games, and its multiplayer element was made free.
The game launched in May 2016 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC behind pretty solid review scores. Before launch, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said he wasn't sure if the game would find an audience. "We don't even know if people will be interested or not," he said at the time.
Battleborn was Gearbox's biggest investment in its history in terms of production, though it's certainly possible that the studio's new, unannounced game could eclipse that if it is indeed Borderlands 3.
A Bunch Of 2K's iOS Games Have Disappeared, And It Might Be Just The Start For The App Store

Publisher 2K has pulled several of its games off Apple's App Store after announcing they won't be supported in the next version of iOS. Apple is set to release the next upgrade, iOS 11, soon, marking an end for support of 32-bit apps. Anyone who updates their operating system will no longer be able to open 32-bit apps on their device. As a result, 2K has announced that the following games will no longer be available for purchase on the App Store:
- Carnival Games
- Carnival Games Lite
- Ace Patrol
- Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies
- Sid Meier's Pirates!
- Duke Nukem Forever Soundboard
- Haunted Hollow
- WWE 2K
2K says you will still be able to make in-app purchases in the games if you already own them, however in-game purchases for Ace Patrol and Haunted Hollow will no longer be available. Many publishers are currently upgrading their games to 64-bit in order to work on iOS 11. But this is unlikely to happen with many games, which means they will also disappear from the App Store. For its part, 2K has pulled two other games from the App Store with the intention of upgrading them to 64-bit: Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution 2 and XCOM: Enemy Within.
Several other 2K games are already compatible with iOS 11 and won't be affected if you update your phone or iPad:
- MyNBA2K17
- WWE SuperCard
- NBA 2K17
- Mafia III: Rivals
- NHL SuperCard 2K17
- Battleborn Tap
Apple is hosting a big conference on September 12, where it's expected it will unveil the iPhone 8 (along with iOS 11). We'll report back then with all of Apple's major announcements.
Six-Year-Old FPS Brink Is Now Free On Steam

Remember that weird, Bethesda-published first-person shooter, Brink? It's now free to download on Steam. In addition, although it still doesn't have a tonof players, it has enough to exceed two other, more recent FPSes.
Yes, it's 2017 and for some reason we're talking about Brink. The game originally launched way back in 2011, and it's pretty clear now that it was ahead of its time. Brink attempted to be both a class-based and high-mobility shooter, well before Overwatch and Titanfall kickstarted the recent renaissance in those genres. Brink was met with lukewarm response from critics, with GameSpot giving it a 6/10.
Now the game is completely free, and it seems that this transition has resurrected some player interest. According to Steamcharts, Brink has surged from a paltry 5-10 people playing per day to well over 2500 players as of today. At the time of this writing, Brink has five times as many players as LawBreakers and Battleborn combined. Although neither of those two games are free-to-play, they are much more recent; LawBreakers launched on August 8 and even garnered a positive critical response. However, LawBreakers sits at around 430 players, while Battleborn has fewer than 100.
If you're interested in trying out Brink, you can download it for free here. There are a few DLC packs that you can pick up for pretty cheap, ranging from $1 to $1.79.
New Humble Bundle Features PS4, PS3, And Vita Games

Humble Bundles typically offer computer or mobile games, though we've also seen a small number that provided a way to get console games for cheap. Another of those promotions is now underway with the launch of the Humble 2K PlayStation Bundle.
These games span PS4, PS3, and Vita, though the bulk are on PS3. This works like a standard Humble Bundle, with multiple pricing tiers that determine what you get. Spending just $1 gets you four games, while beating the average unlocks all but one. Spending $20 or more gets you the excellent XCOM 2 along with everything else included in this bundle. That makes this a strong deal on its own--XCOM 2 is currently on sale on PSN and costs $24 for Plus members just by itself.
This bundle is available from now until August 29. Unlike what we occasionally see, there's no indication that more games will be added; what you see now is what you'll get. You also won't have the option to pay more later to move up to a higher tier, and you'll receive only one key to obtain all of your games.
You can see a full rundown of everything that's included below. The bundle is available here.
Pay $1 or more
- The Bureau: XCOM Declassified + DLC (PS3)
- Civilization Revolution 2 Plus (Vita)
- Evolve (PS4)
- XCOM: Enemy Unknown Plus (Vita)
- 10% off your first month of Humble Monthly
Beat the average
- Battleborn trial + $10's worth of Platinum VC (PS4)
- BioShock (PS3)
- Borderlands (PS3)
- Borderlands 2: Ultimate Edition (PS3)
- Mafia II (PS3)
- Spec Ops: The Line (PS3)
- XCOM: Enemy Within (PS3)

PC/Xbox One Overwatch-Esque Shooter Gigantic Out Now For Free

Remember a few years back when a lot of developers announced hero-based shooters? Overwatch was, of course, the most notable of the bunch, but there was also Battlecry from Bethesda and Gearbox's Battleborn. Gigantic was another one of those hero shooters announced at around the same time, and it finally launches today.
It's available now as a free-to-play title on Xbox One and PC. Following an update released today, there are now 19 playable heroes in the game. The latest, Ramsay, is a "heavy hitter" that wields a sword, according to a press release. Developer Motiga promises that a new character will be released each month from now on.
Although the Overwatch comparisons are clear--it's a colorful, cartoony hero shooter--Gigantic is distinguished by its third-person perspective and its low-poly art style that's somewhat similar to Team Fortress 2's art. It also looks similar to third-person MOBAs like Smite and Battleborn. In addition, matches in Gigantic consist of two teams of five battling on a single map. Each team has a Guardian, a massive creature that has its own skillset; the goal of the game is to kill the other team's Guardian. You can see the launch trailer above.
Although it's free-to-play, you can buy the $30 Ultimate Pack to access all 19 heroes and any additional heroes added in the future. You also receive skins, progression boosts, and in-game currency.
Gigantic has faced a troubled development cycle since its announcement back in 2014. Motiga had to switch publishers in 2016 following layoffs. Further, the game was originally scheduled to launch in 2015, but it was pushed back to 2016 then, finally, 2017.
